The Art Gallery of Ontario now accepts two popular Chinese mobile payment options

Toronto – Starting today, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) accepts payment from WeChat Pay and Alipay, two of China’s biggest mobile payment systems. Visitors to the AGO are invited to use the apps onsite to pay for tickets, events, food and shopping including at AGO Bistro and shopAGO.

Both mobile payment systems allow visitors to pay in Chinese RMB converted to Canadian dollars through the apps. In addition, the systems can translate Mandarin to English.

The Canadian government and Chinese government have declared 2018 as the year of Canada-China Tourism. Each year Toronto receives a growing number of visitors from China, with over 319,000 visitors last year. And an increasing number of Chinese consumers prefer to pay for services through apps on their phones.

“The Art Gallery of Ontario welcomes visitors from Toronto, Canada and all over the world to see and experience great art. WeChat Pay and Alipay help the AGO to continue to extend a warm welcome to our Chinese visitors from Toronto and across the globe,” says Herman Lo, Director of Visitor Experience at the AGO.

“As the majority of Chinese consumers rely on mobile payment apps, and more and more are visiting Canada, it’s wonderful that the Art Gallery of Ontario now offers WeChat Pay and Alipay as options for payment,” says Michael Morin, Senior Customer Relations Manager at OTT Pay Inc. “The AGO joins other major attractions, such as the CN Tower and Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, now offering these payment options.”

ABOUT THE ART GALLERY OF ONTARIO

Located in Toronto, Canada’s largest city of 5.9 million, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is one of the largest art museums in North America. The AGO’s collection of close to 95,000 works ranges from cutting-edge contemporary art such as Untilled by Pierre Huyghe to European masterpieces such as Peter Paul Rubens’s The Massacre of The Innocents; from the vast collection by the Group of Seven to works by established and emerging Indigenous Canadian artists; with a photography collection that tracks the impact of the medium with deep holdings of works by artists such as Garry Winogrand and Diane Arbus; and with focused collections in Gothic boxwood miniatures and Western and Central African art. Drawing on this collection—as well as collaborations with museums around the world—the AGO presents wide-ranging exhibitions and programs, taking special care to showcase diverse and underrepresented artists. A major expansion designed by Frank Gehry in 2008 with lead support from the family of Ken Thomson makes the AGO a highly-photographed architectural landmark.
